Is any part of us real?
Acrylic nails. Synthetic hair. Padded bras. Colored contacts. Fake eyelashes. Make-up. Eye shadow. Mascara. Eyeliner. Lip stick. Lip gloss. Lip liner.
There is nothing real about us.
We are constantly trying to be Black Barbie. We want the long, straight hair and porcelain skin; the pretty brown eyes and long lashes.
I think we want more than Black Barbie’s looks. She has the perfect life. Black Barbie has numerous careers and always has Black Ken at home waiting for her. She has the Dream House with her choice of expensive sports cars. In the words of singer Little Jackie, she’s “the life of the party.”
Black Barbie does not have any worries or cares. There are no professors making her life miserable. There is no pressure from parents to succeed. No boys playing with her heart. No disloyal friends.
She lives in a dream house and life is a dream.
If life were a dream, we would have nothing to live for. Emotion would be void of passion. There would be nothing to work toward; nothing to fight for.
Filling your life with all of those fake things will only make it easier for your personality to become fake. Like Black Barbie, you will do everything with a smile, whether you are happy or not.
It is easy for us to think that looks will get us somewhere, but we need more than that to truly succeed in life. With no make-up, you are exposed. The thought of living without your weave and mascara is scary if you have not done it in a while, but you will be a “real” person.
I am not saying you should be Plain Jane and not care about your appearance at all, but you should not overdue it. Don’t refuse to cut your braids when they are past your waist. Don’t get your nails done so long they curl. Don’t wear so much mascara that you cry black tears.
Black Barbie may seem to have it all, but she has no originality about her. There are thousands of other dolls that look and act just like her.
When you can walk around without the make-up, the fake hair or the lipstick, you will have the confidence to just be yourself. Who else should you be?
