There’s an essay by Toni Morrison, entitled “Cinderella’s Stepsisters,” that has intrigued me for years. While the essay is teeming with amazing quotes, there’s one that strikes me everytime:
“I want not to ask you, but to tell you not to participate in the oppression of your sisters.”
The same things Cinderella’s stepsisters did to her is what we do to each other. We are constantly taking part in the oppression of our sisters.
Sadly, many of us take pleasure in it.
Something I’m learning in my U.S. Women of Color class is that minority women are dynamic, ever-changing but we must learn to live in the complexities of our racial definitions. Our struggles are all different, even if we are from the same race, but we shouldn’t add to the oppressions we already face by hurting one another.
If we build one another up and help one another out, there’s no limit to what minority women can accomplish in this world. That sounds corny, but I swear it’s completely true.

I’ve got some big news coming in the next couple of weeks. Be sure to follow ”Change Starts Here” on Twitter and Facebook for updates.
